CAMBODIA
Mrs. SAROEUN is Assistant Director of the orphanage in Kompong Thom, this orphanage is sponsored by the association 'Enfants d’Asie, ASPECA' and Mrs. Saroeun is the business representative of the orphanage with regards to ASPECA. Mrs. Saroeun, is also the Director's right hand, efficiently managing the accounting of the funds allocated to the upbringing of the children.
The orphanage is organized into 13 families, each with around 12 children composed of all girls or all boys. Each family is under the supervision of a 'nanny'. Mrs. Saroeun is responsible for all the nannies at the orphanage. She listens and organizes regular meetings with them, monitoring the proper functioning of the institution and the development of each child.
The nurses.
Acting as a real mother for the children under her responsabilty, the nanny raises them and ensures they receive a proper all round education to set them on the right path for life, this includes: good manners and school education, Khmer / Cambodian culture, gardening, cooking, cleaning, traditional dance etc.. Many children then go to the University of Phnom Penh to continue with higher education.
At university.
On top of her devotion to the orphanage, Mrs. Saroeun is also a mother of 4 children herself and, step mother to 5 children, she is also one of the 14 nannies in the orphanage. In addition to her administrative work, Mrs. Saroeun accompanies the children to any medical appointments. Starting work very early every morning, she ensures that every child in the orphanage follows their schooling correctly. She goes to the local market to shop for food to feed her little world. Around 11 am, she helps in the preparation of meals. She takes care of feeding the children and ensures that they return to school. Certain children don’t have classes every afternoon so in between her housework she spends extra time coaching the children. She participates in the creation of the evening meal and feeding the children. Like any good nanny, Mrs. Saroeun serves as confidante: healing both physical and emotional pains with great seriousness and patience. Mrs. Sarouen only manages to get back to see her own family once or twice a week, her husband takes care of the family the rest of the time.
She is always on the go but still finds the time to be our local coordinator. She finds and selects the most needy families for us and oversees the projects before, during and after our visits to Cambodia, managing all the stakeholders and ensuring successful completion of our projects. For example, we sunk wells to provide clean water for the locals, involving them in the construction to reduce costs and ensure continued maintenance. Each well allows more families to have access to clean water and radically changes their way of life and hygiene. In 2008, we sunk 10 wells, each destined for a minimum of 3 families. Each family is composed of an average of 5 to 6 people, resulting in between 150 and 180 people having their lives changed. In 2009, we sunk 15 wells.
Mrs. Saroeun, has always a smile on her face even when she is tired, she is always ready to help others. Despite changing her job in December 2009 and taking on a new role in another orphanage in Phnom Penh, she will continue to act as our local coordinator.
